Amerisleep AS3 Mattress Review

Helen

Mattress manufacturing companies strive to meet the sleeping need of all kinds of sleepers. Honestly, it is quite hard, especially with the amount of choice available to consumers now.

The Amerisleep AS3 is one such mattress that does quite well due to its unique blend and time-tested construction. That’s because Amerisleep mattresses are more than just traditional memory foam. The company puts extra time and care into the construction process; thus, generating a high-quality product but at very affordable prices.

Keep in mind that the Amerisleep mattress lineup is a famous brand that has four other models apart from the AS3 (which they say is their bestseller). They are AS1, AS2, AS4, and AS5.

Let’s take a deep dive and further discuss features and buy-ability in our latest Amerisleep AS3 review.

This Mattress Is Ideal If..

The Mattress Is Not Ideal If..

The Amerisleep AS3

"Amerisleep's best-selling mattress. It’s tailored to comfortably adapt to most body types and styles of sleeping."

Mattress Construction/Layer Lineup

The Amerisleep AS3 is 12 inches thick. It is an all-foam mattress and has 3 main layers.

With a medium firmness feel, the mattress lies in the middle of the Amerisleep line of mattresses. The construction features a perfect combination of eco-friendly Bio-Pur memory foam comfort layers and polyfoam, for a balance of support and pressure relief.

The Cover

The AS3 mattress cover features a blend of Celliant, polyester, and spandex. Such a combination results in a stretchy cover, which quickly snaps back into place. That implies it won’t bunch up even if you change position while sleeping or when you get into or out of bed. The cover retains a slightly cool form due to the incorporation of the Celliant technology, which is known to reduce heat buildup and improve sleep quality. Celliant is also known to help body tissue recover faster, making it an ideal fiber to come in contact with while sleeping, especially for active individuals like athletes and gym enthusiasts.

Comfort Zone

The Amerisleep AS3 mattress comfort layer is 3 inches thick. This is one inch thicker than the firmer AS2. Thus, it is softer and a better option for side sleepers. Additionally, the added inch of foam is essential in improving motion isolation.

An intriguing feature is that the comfort zone has high-quality Bio-Pur® memory foam, which utilizes plant-based oils. Thus, eliminating petroleum use and reduces off-gassing and unwanted heat built-up. In addition to this, the foam uses an open cell structure that dissipates heat to aid in cooling.

The memory foam has a 4-pound density; thus, a pretty low response to pressure.  Sleepers sink into the mattress a little bit for pressure relief. Again, it offers some contouring to the body.

Transition Zone

This layer sits right below the comfort layers. It is a polyfoam, 2-inch thick layer with a density of 1.65 lb, and is firmer than the upper layer but less firm than the lower (base) tier. Such a feature makes it transition the top layer comfort (softer) layer into a firmer (base) layer seamlessly.

The transition zone offers some bounce, eliminating the “stuck in the mattress” feel when people try to shift position while sleeping.

Besides, this layer has a convoluted design to create air spaces within the mattress, which enhances breathability, cooling, and temperature regulation.

Also, the transition zone incorporates HIVE Technology, which offers targeted support. HIVE is a zoning technique – Harnessing (H), Intelligent (I), Ventilation (V), and Energy (E).

The Base

The base makes the foundation of the Amerisleep AS3 mattress. It’s a 7-inch thick high density (1.8 lb. density) poly foam built of the Bio-Core® polyfoam. The layer is firm enough to offer support to the upper comfort and transition layers. Typically, its design prevents sagging, provides shape and structure to the mattress, and provides a deeper compression to sleepers.

AS3 Firmness & Body Contour

The Amerisleep AS3 is at the middle area of the firmness spectrum; hence, known as a medium firmness mattress.  The mattress has a cradling feel to the touch – common to memory foam mattresses.

Memory foam allows you to press into the mattress quickly. As such, you can feel like the mattress contours to your hand. When you apply more pressure, you’ll start experiencing some sort of firmness with a little bounce, that is, the transition layer. The polyfoam construction has a quicker response to pressure that memory foam. That is why you have a rebound.

It is noteworthy that each person has a unique feel regarding mattress firmness: reason –the difference in weight distribution, body shaper, and sleeping pattern.

Nonetheless, people weighing between 150 pounds and 250 pounds find this mattress to be comfortable enough.

On a firmness scale of 1 (soft) to 10 (firm/hard), we rate the mattress 5. Any firmness around this range is comfortable for multiple kinds of sleepers. Six and above is medium firmness but hedging towards the firmer side, like the Amerisleep AS2, which we placed as a medium-firm 7/10.

Mattress firmness scale: 5 / 10

Recall, the comfort layer has 3 inches of memory foam. This layer provides decent pressure relief while the polyfoam layer beneath initiates support while smoothly transitioning to the much firmer base. Hence, a beautiful medium feel.

Sleeper Types

  • Back sleepers: The AS3 memory foam offers decent support to the lumbar, making it an ideal option for the back sleepers. When you lie on your back, you feel your weight evenly distributed. Additionally, you’ll feel the layers of foam filling your lower back. You’ll sink a little, especially if you are quite heavy, but you won’t have that stuck feeling when you shift position thanks to the transition layer.
  • Side Sleepers: Pressure points always accompany side sleeping at hips or shoulders. The AS3 mattress has a slight increase in pressure due to weight concentration at a small point, which is actually expected. If you strictly sleep on your side, you might consider getting a softer model of Amerisleep mattress, i.e., AS4 and AS5.
  • Stomach sleepers: The weight of these kinds of sleepers is evenly distributed, which means low pressure across the body. The Amerisleep AS3 mattress keeps your spine well-aligned. Nonetheless, if you are a strict stomach sleeper, something firmer (AS1 and AS2) could be better.

Heat Transfer Capability

Amerisleep AS3 Layers
Cooling gel takes care of unwanted excess body heat

Memory foam is poor at keeping you cool during the night. Though Amerisleep mattresses are memory foam, the mattresses incorporate some aspects to ensure that sleepers have a cool night. They include:

  • Memory foam with open-cell structure: Allows free flow of air, so no heat is built up.
  • Bio-Pur® memory foam layer: This layer utilizes plant-based oils, which initially was meant to reduce gassing and petroleum use. However, it an excellent addition in keeping the heat built up at bay.
  • Celliant technology in the cover: Utilizes infrared light therapy to keep the mattress cool. Ideally, it turns body heat into recyclable energy, which helps the body heal and rejuvenates.
  • Convoluted transition foam: It has grooves, which allow a flow of air/breathability.

In addition to this technology, Amerisleep offers breathable bedding too. When you order the mattress, be sure to check out their Percale Duvet cover set, Recover+ comforter, and the Tencel sheets.

Other Performance Testing On The Amerisleep AS3

Motion Transfer

Foam mattresses are great at motion isolation, and the AS3 is one such mattress that performs well in this category. That is to say, if you sleep with a partner that tosses too much, the effect will be neutralized to a larger extent. On the other hand, if someone climbs or jumps onto the bed, you might feel some movement. That is because of the weight.

Edge Support

Mattresses with a soft upper part usually has a problem supporting weight at the perimeter. The AS3 mattress, nevertheless, gives a little compression when you sit on the bed edge because the polyfoam can support much weight. Similarly, when you roll to the side while sleeping, you’ll compress the mattress, but it doesn’t give the insecure feeling of rolling off.

Durability

The density of the material affects durability. Amerisleep’s AS3 has a 1.65 and 1.8 PCF for the transition layers and the base, respectively. The top memory foam layer stands at 4 PCF. This combination matches the price and offers decent value for the money paid.

Warranty

Industry-leading 20-year warranty, which is divided into two, i.e., mattress replacement in case of defects in the first 10 years and prorated replacement in the last ten years.

Sleep Trial

The sleep trial could be longer when compared to other mattresses in this category. At 100-nights, the trial period is fair in comparison to others who generally float around 120-365 days.

Bed Compatibility

It’s compatible with multiple bed frames and bases such as platform beds, mattress foundations, adjustable bed frames, and floor.

Value For Money

Numerous factors come into play when evaluating value for money. In our opinion, the price is about right for an eco-friendly plant-based memory foam mattress that offers a 20-year warranty and a 100-night sleep trial. Of course, comfort is relative, but the build quality is excellent overall. We have seen worse mattresses with higher price tags.

Our Amerisleep AS3 Ratings

The Verdict

The Amerisleep AS3 has a medium feel but offering a decent blend of support and softness. Sleepers get an enveloping feel but get added support to avoid being stuck in the bed. If you are an average shopper, you’ll appreciate the universal medium firmness, which is an excellent option for sleepers of different kinds.

AS3 is a popular mattress because it stays cool during nights and provides targeted pressure relief. If you sleep hot, and also sleep in multiple positions, then this can be an excellent mattress for you. However, if you are reasonably heavyweight, AS3 might not be your ideal option, and therefore should consider looking at the Amerisleep AS2 instead.
