Casper Mattress Review: The Original (Memory Foam)

Helen

Casper mattresses have been around since 2014. All beds from this manufacturer are high-quality. That’s why they have earned a top spot in the increasingly competitive sleep industry. Each company has something unique to offer to their customers. And this is one way to remain relevant. As for Casper, their Original mattress model offers an unparalleled combination of cooling and support. What does this mean to you?

Simply put, the Casper Original is available in memory foam or hybrid options (hybrid contains spring and foam). Our Casper mattress review will focus solely on the former, i.e., the all-foam option.

The new 2020 edition Casper memory foam mattress is an update to the 2019 model. It features an innovative support system that guarantees you all-night comfort. That means proper spinal alignment, more pain relief, and for hot sleepers, the mattress won’t trap the excessive heat to make you sweat out.

No doubt, the Casper mattress has aroused much intrigue since its release; being one of the most popular mattresses sold online would, of course, be a difficult position to hold if it was no good. So, let’s take a closer look in our latest Casper mattress review, and see what this bed is all about.

Mattress Layers and Construction

Casper mattress layers

Including the cover, there are four core layers, and this is how they look like:

The Cover

The most noticeable thing about the Casper mattress cover is that it is relatively thick, which gives it a feel of premium goods from the outset. It’s not too thick where you’ll engage less with the comfort layers. For weighty people, they will considerably engage with all of these layers, especially those underneath, so a thick cover is paramount to the comfort and durability of the mattress.

The Casper mattress cover is made of Polyester and spandex. These materials have excellent breathability, and their premium nature gives the outer a quality look and feel. The edges are grey, while the rest of the design is a simple dotted pattern. Undoubtedly, it looks very appealing aesthetically compared to most mattresses of this price range, which are generally very bland and basic.

Despite the cover’s thickness, it stretchy and pliable, which is ideal for putting back on after it has been cleaned (if choosing to machine wash). The good thing with this cover is that it doesn’t bunch up when you move around on the bed, unlike others we have reviewed.

The cover has a zipper and is therefore removable and also washable. However, Casper Sleep does not recommend machine washing (as it may shrink) but instead advise on spot cleaning.

The Top Layer

Also known as the comfort layer, this sits immediately beneath the mattress cover and is made up of a special polyurethane open-cell foam. Casper Sleep calls it a layer of Airscape™, and is perforated breathable foam for increased ventilation. What’s more, the open cell nature of the layer increases airflow and circulates air within its open cells. So, you do not get hot while sleeping.

The layer is 1 ½ inch thick and has a similar feel to that of latex. It is proprietary material, so exploiting details isn’t an option now. However, it provides the bounce that you need for mobility and push-back contouring and support. Additionally, it is highly responsive and naturally cooling. You’ll appreciate the fact that it is a premium foam, and it conforms to your body; so, you’ll have some decent pressure relief.

Casper Sleep places it at the top of the mattress to ensure you get excellent mobility. So you’ll be able to get out or into your bed quickly. Again, it is a useful feature for combo sleepers since they change positions more often during the night. This reduces the feeling of getting “stuck in the bed” that some other memory foam mattresses may feel like.

Memory Foam Layer

This is underneath the comfort layer (placed in the middle of the three core parts). This is usually termed as the contour layer because it has zones/segments that contour to your body’s shape. It offers targeted support with 3 ergonomic zones for spinal alignment and better pressure-point relief. It is softer under your shoulders and firmer around the waist, hips, and lower back, thus reducing the chance of waking up with pains in these areas.

Essentially, the layer is 1 ½ inch and is made up of responsive memory foam. It is a unique layer as it has a slower response to movements and offers impressive pressure relief when interacting with the topmost comfort layer. It is a bit firmer, so its placement beneath the perforated Airscape™ layer is strategic, i.e., prevents excessive sinkage. Also, as memory foam has a reputation for heat-trapping, the upper, breathable foam counters that effect.

The Base

This is the foundation of the mattress and aims to ensure proper support and to transition from the upper (polyurethane) to the lower (memory foam) layers. It is much thicker and firmer than the two top layers and has a minimal response to motion.

Additionally, it helps the upper zonal foam support different parts of the body in a targeted way, i.e., you get gentle comfort and bolstered cradling, without an overwhelming feeling of either one of them.

The base is durable and makes the foundation of your mattress. It doesn’t allow sinking or sagging, because it is built of high-density material to take the brunt of the upper comfort layers. The base confers extended mattress lifespan and gives the overall shape to the Casper.

Certifications

This isn’t exactly an organic latex mattress where you’d expect to see certifications like GOLS and GOTS. However, it’s worth noting that all foams used in building the Casper memory foam mattress comply with the CertiPUR-US® program. This means the mattress is safe for your home and the environment; foams are regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission Low VOC emissions for indoor air quality.

Casper Mattress Firmness and Feel Rating

Different people have a different perspective on the firmness of mattresses, owing to the differences in weight, shape, and body size. Thus, what we are giving you is an average of numerous Casper mattress reviews. In our opinion, the mattress has a firmness rating of around 6.5 on a scale of 1 to 10, making it a medium-firm feel.

Mattress firmness scale: 6.5 / 10

Typically, the Casper bed features a combination of memory foam and polyfoam layers with a clever arrangement for maximum comfort. The general firmness of the mattress is soft, yet supportive when it comes to bearing weight, however heavy it may be. While the Casper has a memory foam layer, you won’t have the overwhelming feeling of deep hugging that you might experience in softer all-foam mattresses.

Going back to the construction, the zoned support layer features two kinds of polyfoam, i.e., soft polyfoam (shoulders) and firm foam (hips). So, the firmness can change depending on how you position yourself on the bed.

For instance, if you stretch towards the top, i.e., near the headboard, you feel a softer feel than shimming down toward the peak of the hardness at the center. With the diversity of materials in its construction, the Casper foam mattress is quite comfortable for most sleepers. Still, back, side, and combo sleepers can all find this mattress very comfortable indeed.

Sleep Position Analysis and Pressure Relief

People have different body shapes, weight as well as varying tastes and preferences. For example, do you sleep on your stomach, back, side, or switch between these sleeping positions? Would you like to have something firm under your hips, waist, and lower back?

Getting a comfortable sleep means that you do not have any part of your body overly pressed, i.e., balanced support without pressure points. For side sleepers, the shoulder and hip are notable pressure points. Back sleepers will need support for their lower back region. Similarly, stomach sleepers will need some support at their waistline.

The strongest point of the Casper mattress is that regardless of your sleeping position, you still achieve proper spinal alignment. That can mean both a decent amount of pressure relief and support, without waking up in pain in the morning. Let’s look at how different sleepers will feel:

Back Sleepers

When you lie on your back, the typical feeling is the zoned layers of foam filling the space at the lumbar region, which gives nice relief from sinkage. Indeed, you’ll sink a little, but it won’t provide a feeling of getting stuck in the mattress. The memory foam reacts well to increased weight and can withstand large amounts of pressure. Back sleepers will get good contouring and comfort when using the Casper.

Side Sleepers

The relief level is satisfying when you sleep on the sides, thanks to the three-zone support system. The softer foam at the shoulder supports it as you press into layers of the mattress. This is the case, regardless of body shape or weight.

Stomach Sleepers

Your spine will remain in a healthy position when you lie on your stomach using the Casper mattress. However, if you’re overweight, you may feel some discomfort. Your hips sink slightly out of line with your shoulders. This causes tension in the lower back. It would be better to find a firmer mattress for better spinal alignment if you are a strict stomach sleeper weighing over 300 lbs. However, a large number of stomach sleepers on the other hand, will be just fine, especially those who are 250 lbs and less.

Hot Sleepers

Casper Sleep has made some efforts to reduce the heat buildup that memory foam is traditionally known for. In reality, we’d say the mattress doesn’t exactly sleep cool but is more of a temperature neutral mattress. Casper utilizes proprietary AirScape design on its comfort foam, which helps with airflow, but not sufficient enough to call the Casper Original a cooling mattress. This is fine, in our opinion, as any foam mattress that can prevent heat build-up and remains at a proper temperature is good.

Unless you have a medical condition that makes you excessively hot or experiences night sweats, you should be fine. If you are looking for something more focused on keeping the body temperature down, you can try the Casper Wave, their hybrid cooling mattress.

Motion Isolation

All foam mattresses are good at isolating motion. So, even if you share the Casper bed with a partner who tosses and turns a lot, you won’t feel these actions much, if at all. This is often a major deciding factor for couples, especially for combo sleepers who frequently switch positions throughout the night. The Casper memory foam mattress is among the elite when it comes to motion isolation, and no need to worry about motion transfer.

Casper Mattress Sizes and Weight

Below is a list of all the Casper mattress sizes, their dimensions and approximate weight:

SizeDimensions (W L H)Weight
Twin38” x 75” x 11”46 lbs.
Twin XL38” x 80” x 11”50 lbs.
Full53” x 75” x 11”67 lbs.
Queen60” x 80” x 11”79 lbs.
King76” x 80” x 11”101 lbs.
Cali King72” x 84” x 11”100 lbs.

Sex

Anyone who has owned one already will know that memory foam mattress sex is somewhat different from how it is on an innerspring version. As for the all-foam Casper, it offers the same experience as any other foam mattress, i.e., less bounce and less “give” but plenty of additional support. The foam is relatively fast-responding too, which means switching between positions will be quick and easy.

Edge Support

Woman on the edge of a Casper bed

Edge support is an essential feature for couples as they need the entire surface of the bed to support them. This is particularly important if your mattress is quite small with limited space. Memory foam mattresses arent great when it comes to edge support, but some are certainly better than others.

The Casper memory foam mattress doesn’t disappoint when it comes to this. When you sit on the edge of the bed, as expected, it sinks just a little, but it will adequately support your weight.

Similarly, when you lie on the side, there is a little dip, but it doesn’t give you the insecure feeling of falling off the bed.

Customer Service

Poor customer service can really let a company down, even if the product is great. Casper support is award-winning, so hopefully, any pre/post-sales issues and queries can be dealt with efficiently and effectively. Our experience with the web chat personnel was fast and straight to the point, with no waiting around and 100 questions before getting started. You can also phone or book a video call appointment (via Google Hangouts).

The Verdict

People in need of a new mattress with a medium-firm firmness and an excellent combination of support and pain relief should consider buying the Casper Original mattress. It’s ideal for all sleeping positions and offers an effective support system due to its 3 zone layer.

Whether you opt for a Full, Queen, or King, the edge support and motion isolation is par with higher priced memory foam mattresses. Couples will therefore get along with this one just fine.

It offers good value in terms of price, but the warranty and sleep trial could have been longer, as you’ll find most of Caper’s competitors provide a lifetime warranty and upwards of 100 night trials. Nonetheless, these factors may be negligible, considering you’ll most likely not need to make use of trial or warranty.
