Eco Terra Mattress Review

Your sleep can be affected by your choice of mattress, especially if it’s old or simply not right for your sleeping position. Not all mattresses are the same. Some models offer better support for specific types of sleepers. There are mattresses designed for stomach sleepers while there are those mattresses meant for back sleepers. Some are medium firmness, while others feel plush. Finding the perfect mattress can be daunting, especially if you’re new to this.

In case you are looking for a comfortable new mattress that uses organic materials, you might want to take a closer look at the Eco Terra natural latex and spring hybrid mattress by Eco Terra Beds. It has been on the market for some time now and doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon, so we thought we’d give the mattress a review and analyze some of the key features that make this one stick out.

In our Eco Terra mattress review, we’ll take an in-depth look and learn about what makes it a popular option and whether or not it is the right mattress for you.

Eco Terra Mattress Layers & Construction

The construction of the Eco Terra mattress is perhaps one of the main reasons why it is a favorite among many of its customers. It is in the caliber of a high-end luxury mattress, that can be purchased without paying the super high price tags. This mattress is a hybrid combo of both latex and individually wrapped spring coils. The latex layer is composed of Arpico 100% natural Talalay latex, which is an organic material sourced in Asia. It meets the standards not just of any consumer looking for a good night’s sleep but someone who loves eco-friendly products as well. We’ll discuss the safety standards and certifications further below.

Another vital part that makes the Eco Terra hybrid mattress appealing is the presence of the 16-gauge coils encased in fabric (known as pocketed springs). These are designed to bring additional support to sleepers.

The total height of the Eco Terra mattress is 11 inches (similar to the synthetic latex and memory foam GhostBed). It isn’t too tall or too short, which means that it fits most sheets as well, while also keeping the cost of production and selling price down. Let’s take a look at how the 11-inch composition is layered:

  • The top layer is made of Arpico 100% natural Talalay latex (not blended or synthetic). It is 3 inches thick and is tasked with providing a comfortable cradling effect and pressure relief. Natural latex is highly durable, hypoallergenic, and can contour to your body but in a slightly different way to memory foam.
  • Next, you have the 8-inch support core that has between 682 to 1,280 pocketed Quantum coils (depending on the size of the mattress you choose). What is unique about these coils is that they are made of recycled steel (sourced in the USA). Each coil is individually encased to prevent puncturing other parts of the latex or cotton batting, and also to reduce noise.

Comfort and Support

You get two types of firmness levels for the Eco Terra mattress. You can buy either the medium or the medium-firm option. The medium option is the closest feel to memory foam. Using the Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) as a unit of measuring the softness or firmness of a mattress, the medium Eco Terra mattress is at 24-26. On the other hand, you get the medium-firm, which has an ILD of 29-31, which means that it offers more support and offers minimal sinking. In our opinion, on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the firmest and 1 being the softest, the medium would rate at a 5, and the medium-firm would be placed at a level of 6.5.

The decision to combine latex and pocket coils is what seems to favor the Eco Terra. In terms of feel, latex is springy and pushes back into the pressure points of your body, thus creating support where gaps in the body’s natural shape may occur. This allows for an active type of support (as opposed to memory foam, which is reactive) that prevents the likelihood of aches and pains in the morning.

Additionally, under the 3 inches of latex, we mentioned earlier is the 8-inch coil base. What makes these coils different from the usual Bonnell springs? Pocket coils are known to be more responsive and better at contouring than your typical innerspring core. The reason behind this is that pocket coils act independently and don’t compress their neighboring coils when you exert pressure on them, forcing them to work alone and allow for inch-perfect pressure point relief and contouring.

Certifications and Health

Sustainably sourced latex, cotton, and wool are all organic materials used in the composition of the mattress. Any mattress that claims to use organic materials should be able to present certifications and prove the standards met. Eco Terra made it a point to have their mattress certified. And this is beyond just marketing, as it has also prioritized the consumers’ health. It meets the following standards for proof of non-toxic substances that may harm their customers:

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified: This refers to the Arpico 100% natural Talalay latex, proving it is safe, being free from any synthetic harmful substances.
  • GOTS certified organic wool and cotton: The soft organic wool and cotton used on this mattress and the cover are both GOTS certified. This proves that the wool and cotton are both 100% natural and ethically sourced.

Heat Reduction Ability

Many consumers with health conditions or those who live in hot countries are often concerned about whether or not they can sleep throughout the night without getting too hot. Sleeping hot is annoying since you wake up sweating and sometimes unable to go back to sleep.

In terms of sleeping hot, memory foam mattresses are the worst culprits (unless they are gel-infused). Latex mattresses on their own arent as hot as memory foam mattresses, and spring mattresses work well to reduce body heat too.

The Eco Terra is a luxury hybrid spring and latex mattress. The organic latex generally keeps the body temperature neutral, and the large coil chamber underneath contributes to the overall airflow within the system. Overall, the Eco Terra scored quite high due to the combination of materials in its design, meaning there was minimal heat retention.

Motion Transfer & Isolation

An area that the Eco Terra scored reasonably well was the motion isolation test. Though latex isn’t the best at isolating movement, the independently acting springs are. It’s thanks to the hundreds of springs that offer the inch-perfect isolation that bumps up the ability to isolate movement between partners and pets sharing a bed. However, using latex as the top layer meant some transfer occurred. Latex isn’t as effective as memory foam when it comes to isolating movement, but that’s that balance you’ll have to juggle when it comes to choosing between the two materials.

How Is The Edge Support?

The Eco Terra offers above-average edge support compared to other mattresses in this price range. The resilient latex layer combined with the 16 gauge coils did a significant job of minimizing the dip when sat by the edge of the mattress. However, if you are going to compare the amount of support that you get between the center and the edge of the mattress, you’ll discover that you can have a better experience if you opt to sleep by the center mainly because of the coil zoning feature. That being said, sleeping on the edge doesn’t feel unsafe or create a huge dip as other mattresses would.

Shipping & Setting Up

The company offers free shipping anywhere within the continental US. However, if you are from Alaska or Hawaii, you will have to pay an additional fee. You can also opt to have the White Glove delivery option for an additional $299. The perks of White Glove delivery is that it has an in-home mattress assembly service included. However, $299, in our opinion is a steep price to pay, especially when other companies offer it circa $150 (Leesa Sleep) or even for free (Saatva).

So what’s the ideal bed to support the Eco Terra mattress? Well, almost any type of bed or surface will work. It means that you can choose a slatted bed frame or even an electric adjustable bed. However, be sure that the spacing between each slat will not be more than 3 inches. This ensures that the entire mattress is supported and won’t damage the spring base. Another good option is a platform bed or boxspring. This allows the whole underneath of the mattress to be fully supported.

Eco Terra Mattress Price

Eco Terra Beds offers a reasonable price for its consumers. Rarely can you enjoy a mattress with a large portion of natural latex in its composition for less than $1,000. But with the Eco Terra mattress, you can get started from $749. The prices rise above $1,000 if you opt to have the Queen-sized mattress or bigger. See the table below for recent prices.

Warranty, Sleep Trial and Returns

A lengthy warranty is paramount when you’re spending hundreds, sometimes thousands on a mattress. Even though the mattress feels exceptionally well built, you’ll be pleased to know that it comes with a 15-year warranty. That is perfect in our opinion as although mattresses should be changed within 10 years, most people keep them slightly longer, which is where the 15-year warranty would be handy.

Sleep trial is when you get to decide whether or not you’d like to keep the mattress after a period of usage in the home. The longer the sleep trial, the better. Eco Terra Beds are offering 90-days in-home usage. This is shorter than most places, which provide anything from 100-365 nights of trial period.

The company offers free returns but only after 30 days. If you are going to return the mattress before the first 30 days of the 90-day trial, you will have to shoulder the $99 convenience charge.

Who Should Buy the Eco Terra Mattress

People below 250 pounds body weight

If you are someone who weighs below 250 lbs, you can easily enjoy the Eco Terra latex mattress. The medium-firm option offers enough support to align the spine effectively. You’ll be able to wake up without any pain or discomfort associated with mattresses that can’t support your back.

People with back problems

If you are someone suffering from back pain or hip problems, you might be best off choosing the medium-firm Eco Terra. It offers both pain relief and support thanks to the high-quality latex and the pressure-relieving springs.

Those who share a bed

If you are the type who shares the bed with a partner or a large pet such as a cat or dog, then you won’t have a problem with this bed. Thanks to the good motion isolation properties, there is less likelihood of being disturbed at night by movement from across the other side of the bed.

Those who like sex

Sex is a bouncy activity that is enhanced with a bouncy mattress. That’s why spring and latex combined make a good surface for sex. The Eco Terra offers good bounce compared to the feel of a memory foam mattress, which tends to have low bounce capabilities and somewhat restrictive properties. On a scale of 1-10, 1 being the bounciest (traditional spring mattresses) and 10 being the stiffest (firm memory foam), we’d rate this mattress 5.

Those who like to sleep cool

Whether it is summer or you simply stay in one spot for too long, you won’t have any problem when it comes to this mattress. With the coil chamber, it offers enough airflow to keep the sleeper cool. And also, compared to memory foam, Talalay latex is known for its naturally cooling properties.

People who sleep near the edge

Do you tend to move around in bed, and you are worried that you might fall off the edge? The EcoTerra offers superior edge support. Though sleeping in the center is still better than sleeping right at the very edge, because of the coil zoning design of the mattress, you always get sufficient support even if there’s more dip right at the side.

Budget-conscious customers

Are you someone who doesn’t want to spend over $2,000 for a Queen size mattress? This product is priced reasonably for a luxury hybrid mattress. You can enjoy a Twin size below $750, which is quite rare, especially for this caliber of mattress. The largest size (Cali King) is priced only at $1,249, which places it in an affordable mid-range price category.

Consumers who aren’t sure about their purchase

Are you still not sure whether or not you should buy this mattress? The good news is that they offer free returns (after 30 days). In addition to this, you get a maximum of 90 days to try the mattress and decide whether or not it fits your needs. If you aren’t satisfied, you simply need to box it and inform them of your intention to return the mattress.

Those who prefer to enjoy eco-friendly products

More and more consumers are becoming health conscious when it comes to buying products that they use daily, especially if it’s for their children too. As you can see from the certifications mentioned above, the Eco Terra mattress was built without the use of any harmful substances or toxins. Additionally, the steel used on the coil system is recycled.

Our Eco Terra Ratings

The Verdict

Our Eco Terra mattress review has uncovered some good and bad points that hopefully have been useful for a potential customer. It offers good value in terms of comfort, support, and edge support. Motion isolation is sufficing too, not as good as memory foam, but latex is considered a more premium material overall, so that’s the balance you’ll juggle. The warranty is excellent, but the sleep trial could’ve been slightly longer, even by 10-30 days, and it would’ve been in the same thresholds as its competitors. But what makes this mattress extra special is the fact it offers certified eco-friendly components, which is something that many people seek nowadays. Overall, the Eco Terra is a good option for those searching for a luxurious mattress around the $1000 mark.
