The GhostBed Luxe by Nature’s Sleep is a depiction of the ever-advancing technology in the sleep industry. The 13-inch thick mattress features cooling technology both on the surface and the core, ensuring you get a cool and comfortable sleeping experience. Undoubtedly, the GhostBed Luxe is a high-end piece that is a perfect fit for hot sleepers and those who want higher pressure relief. While this may sound so good, how accurate are these claims? Is it good enough to outshine the plethora of mattresses on the market in 2020? Let’s find out more in our latest GhostBed Luxe review.

Who Is The GhostBed Luxe Best For?

  • Couples: GhostBed Luxe is good at isolating motion. Also, the mattress has firm edges; thus, couples can utilize the whole bed.
  • Hot sleepers: If you sweat a lot while asleep, the GhostBed Luxe features Phase-change material and fiber padding, which enhances breathability and draws heat away from the sleeper. As such, the bed offers a cooler sleeping surface.
  • Side sleepers: The mattress has a medium feel, which provides ample cushioning to side sleepers, preventing pressure buildup at the hips and shoulders.
  • Those with back pains: People who expect responsive contouring feel for their back will like this mattress.
  • Sleepers wanting a cooling mattress: This is claimed to be the coolest bed in the world.
  • Combo sleepers: The medium feel and the quick-acting foam makes it ideal for people who switch positions often while they sleep.

Who Won't Love The GhostBed Luxe?

  • Those who need a firmer sleeping surface: GhostBed Luxe hugs you gently while sleeping. That means you sleep somewhat "in" and not "on," the mattress. So if you prefer a firmer surface, or you are a stomach sleeper weighing over 230 pounds, this won't be great for you.
  • Shoppers on a tight budget: The GhostBed is a luxury mattress. Thus, it costs a premium.

Mattress Details

The GhostBed Luxe mattress is a product of Nature’s Sleep that features cooling technology and thick, memory foam construction. Besides the GhostBed Luxe, the company also produces the GhostBed Flex (hybrid), the new GhostBed 3D Matrix, and the original flagship GhostBed.

As for the Luxe, the bed’s cover features an infusion of cooling fibers and an inch thick padding for cushioning.

Beneath this topmost layer is the phase-change material known as Ghost Ice, which helps to maintain a comfortable body temperature regardless of how hot you may become while asleep. Then, there are the comfort layers built of gel-infused memory foam, a polyfoam transition layer for the bounce, and finally, a high-density polyfoam support core.

The combination of such materials in unique layers results in a 13-inch thickness with medium firmness that oozes an impressive sense of quality and construction.

GhostBed Luxe Construction

GhostBed Luxe layers

It is definitely one of the cooler beds out there despite being predominantly made of memory foam. It’s a known fact that foam beds retain heat. However, the GhostBed Luxe overcomes this by using the latest cooling technology.

The phase-change Ghost Ice layer and gel memory foam, confer the cooling ability to the mattress. The materials regulate body temperature resulting in an overall better night’s sleep. Additionally, the distribution of proprietary foam in multiple locations within the bed ensures efficient cooling all night long. To understand the effectiveness more, we must look at the structure:

Cover

Ghost Ice Fabric is the cover material, a proprietary blend that utilizes a Japanese technique to weave cooling technology into the yarn. The cover is instantly cool to the touch and provides temperature regulation and neutrality. Furthermore, the material is soft and smooth but has noticeable high and low tufts.

The cover is quilted with a 1″ of cool burst airflow technology fiber for proper aeration, and a 1″ layer of gel memory foam for both cooling and a hug feeling. While memory foam is infamous for trapping heat, the gel infusion helps to minimize heat-traps.

Comfort Layer

A 2-inch gel memory foam forms this layer and allows sleepers to sink for maximum pressure relief and body contouring comfortably.

Furthermore, gel memory foam helps to dissipate body heat. Underneath, a thin cooling layer (phase change Ghost Ice) laminates the comfort layer. It contributes to heat absorption from the body and keeps the bed’s surface from getting too hot for the sleeper. The memory foam has a density of 4 pounds per cubic foot (PCF), so is medium density.

Transition Layer

It is the Ghost Bounce layer which is the company’s proprietary material that behaves like latex, i.e., highly responsive. However, it is a soft foam layer that allows sleepers to sink as it contours to your body shape. Also, it is surprisingly resilient, i.e., it has a quicker response to pressure, in turn, offering some bounce and better responsiveness when switching sleeping positions. The layers act as a transition from the top softer layers to a firmer base.

Base/Support Layer

The base is a 7.5-inch high layer build of high-density polyfoam, with a density of 2 PCF. While being firm, it has a quick response to pressure, making it a good foundation for the upper areas. It gives shape to the mattress and supports spinal alignment by supporting your body and preventing heavier pressure points from occurring.

GhostBed Luxe Firmness & Feel

Ghostbed Luxe firmness

On a scale of 1 – 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the hardest, the GhostBed Luxe has a rating of  6. However, mattress firmness is subjective. Sleepers have different body sizes, weights, and shapes. Thus, people may have a differing opinion on the firmness of a mattress.

Mattress Feel
Firmness Scale: 6 / 10

Nevertheless, the GhostBed Luxe is a pleasure to use. The quilted cover has a tender feel and allows you to sink a bit for pressure relief. When you push harder upon the mattress, you encounter the layers of memory foam, which are contouring and support the areas of the body most needed.

Sleeping Position

Are you a strict side, back, or stomach sleeper, or do you switch positions while sleeping? Your sleeping position, together with your weight, is a significant determinant of the mattress that fits you. Remember, a human body has pressure points: the hips, shoulders, and the lower back. The wrong mattress can increase pressure at these points, making them painful.

Back sleepers

When you lay on your back, the mattress distributes weight evenly. You sink a little because the quilted cover and the comfort layers contain memory foam. Further, these layer contour to your body.

Side sleepers

If you are a side sleeper, you will notice that you sink a bit more into the mattress because of the weight concentration over a small surface area. Many side sleepers have issues at their shoulders and hips. However, the GhostBed Luxe overcomes this problem by providing comforting relief, not only at these points but also in the entire body.

Stomach sleepers

The distribution of your weight is even in this position too. This implies that there is low pressure across all parts, including your chest. Thus, you can breathe well while in this position. However, you will feel slight sinkage at the hips considering the mattress is a little soft. Stomach sleepers usually prefer something firmer.

Combo sleepers

Changing positions frequently throughout the night requires a responsive mattress. The ability to adjust the position easily depends on the nature of the mattress material. Luxe is a foam bed, which allows you to sink in a bit more than spring or latex. That means you may find it a bit challenging to switch positions quickly. Essentially, the mattress has a slow response to pressures, but you can pretty promptly change position without too much effort.

Heavy Individuals

GhostBed Luxe is favorable for heavy individuals because it is a thick mattress. What’s more, it is built of durable material; thus, it can withstand heavier body weights. While many foam mattresses are not suitable for people above 250 pounds, the GhostBed Luxe is a unique exception. It lies on the firmer end of the medium firmness; hence, providing adequate support for moderately heavy sleepers. GhostBed claims the Luxe can withstand weights of up to 750 lbs (combined weight).

Motion Isolation

Ghostbed Luxe on a platform bed

Motion isolation is a significant factor for partners sharing a bed. Can you feel movements when your partner enters, leaves, or switches position while sleeping on Luxe? Yes, but only minimal disturbances, thanks to the memory foam layers. Foam beds are great at isolating motion, and the GhostBed Luxe doesn’t fail at that.

Temperature Neutrality

Contrary to the popular opinion that foam beds sleep hot (foam traps heat), GhostBed mattresses incorporate the latest features to ensure you sleep cool. They include phase-change material and fiber padding, which draws heat from your body and dissipates it. Overall, the gel and proprietary GhostBed materials do an above-average job at reducing body temperature, even for those who suffer from night sweats.

Edge Support

When you sit on the edge, there is a little sagging, which is expected due to weight concentration. However, it is supportive of a comfortable sitting. Similarly, when you sleep near the edges, there is minimal compression, and it doesn’t give you a feeling of rolling off the bed. This is rare for this type of mattress; thus, you get decent support and a larger usable surface area.
