Idle Sleep Hybrid Mattress Review: The Updated 2020 Model

Better Slumber

Many people who buy their mattresses end up frustrated because they don’t get the right firmness that they wanted. Either they buy a firm mattress and wish it was softer. Or, in some instances, there are those sleepers who want to have a firm mattress one day, and a plush feel the following day.

The updated Idle Hybrid by Idle Sleep is a 2-sided flippable mattress option that allows you to choose between the types of firmness that you want. On one side, you’ll find a Medium firmness, while on the flip side, you get Luxury-Firm.

So, apart from this cool feature, what else can you expect from this newly updated product for 2020? Let’s take a closer look at the Hybrid, which is also the latest in our lineup of Idle mattress reviews.

Who Would Love This Mattress?

Who Won't Love This Mattress?

The Idle Hybrid Mattress

"A new and improved design which offers tons of value and irresistible comfort."

Construction & Layers

This mattress is composed of different foams and pocketed coils to deliver an ultimate sleep experience for its users. It offers superior quality foams that give you the right amount of support and comfort. And another thing that makes it rare is its price-to-thickness ratio. This mattress is 14 inches thick and comes in cheaper than other Hybrids of this height.

Unlike most mattresses, the Idle Sleep Hybrid mattress is composed of seven layers. We’ll discuss them in detail below:

  • The topmost layer is made of Thermocool™ fabric. It was designed to promote natural thermal capabilities helping the user feel comfortable and have a neutral temperature. The smart technology helps you to stay cool when too hot, and warm when you’re too cold.
  • The second layer is added for safety. It is a natural fire-resistant barrier used to stop the mattress from catching fire. Unlike some fire-resistant barriers, this has a non-petroleum based synthetic material.
  • Beneath this is a 1″ IDLE contouring foam that adds softness to the topmost layer. It also helps in following the user’s form, giving a somewhat hugging feeling.
  • The fourth layer is what’s known as 2″ IDLE Cooling Buoyancy Foam. According to the company, this works more effectively than your average memory foam. It offers enhanced support and gives you four times better pressure relief. And also, they claim it performs better when it comes to keeping the sleeper cool while asleep.
  • Under the Buoyancy Foam is a transition layer, which is a 1″ thick foam. This is what transitions the segments, as mentioned earlier, into the next, which is the bulk of the inner core.
  • A majority of the core is made up of 6″ of individually acting springs. These are known as Quantum edge-to-edge pocketed coils. This offers the most support for the mattress. It allows the mattress not only to carry your weight but also works well whenever you are sleeping with a partner who tends to toss and turn at night.
  • Beneath the coils is the foams mentioned above, all in reverse. They are the same as the first five layers from the other side. This means that if you flip the mattress, you get the same composition but with different density foams, being Medium or Luxury-Firm, depending on which way up you start.

Comfort, Firmness, and Sleeping Position

A lady sleeping on her comfortable Idle mattress

The Idle Sleep Hybrid mattress has two firmness options. For the Medium side, we consider it as something that isn’t too plush nor too firm. On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest, it’s somewhere around 5.5. On this side, you will feel that the quilted top brings a plush and soft feel to the mattress. Though it feels plush, you don’t feel as if you are sinking in too much. It gives your body a deep cradle but firm enough to not give you a difficult time moving around the mattress due to the responsive foam and 6″ layer of coils.

Now, once you flip this mattress over, you get something that is a little harder. Using the same scale, this would most likely land an 8 rating. It offers the same level of support, but the foam is what makes the difference in providing a harder sleep surface.

On both sides, the support is extremely good. In fact, Idle Sleep claims their Buoyancy Foam is 400% more supportive than traditional memory foam. In our opinion, there is perfect contouring and pressure point relief in crucial areas such as the hips, shoulders, and spine.

Safety & Certifications

Many people tend to stay away from a mattress that doesn’t provide them with environmentally safe and non-harmful materials. With the Hybrid Idle mattress, you can be sure that the foams used are CERTIPUR-US Certified. This means it doesn’t have chemicals that can do damage to the ozone layer. Plus, you don’t have PBDEs, mercury, lead, and TDCPP that could harm your health. According to Idle Sleep, only 1% of beds earn CERTIPUR-US certification

Motion Isolation & Transfer

idle sleep motion isolation

The Idle Sleep mattress performs well in this category. It can keep the motion isolated on one side mainly because of the thick foams and a large number of independently moving coils. This makes it a perfect option for those who are sharing the bed with partners or large pets. If you are a light sleeper, you won’t have a problem with motion initiated disturbance at night because it can effectively minimize the movement felt on the other side.

Cooling Capacity

You might think that this is one of those foam mattresses that tend to get too hot at night. Yes, it has a multiple foam construction and even a proprietary foam layer that acts similarly to memory foam. However, the company made it possible to keep the sleeper cool and minimize heat retention. For example, it doesn’t have the viscoelastic chemicals that are present in most memory foams. It means that it features a similar feel in terms of comfort but doesn’t retain as much heat as your average memory foam.

Also, the mix of coil and foam allows the air to move in and out of the mattress freely. It helps in preventing the foam from retaining the warmth that comes from the user’s body, especially when someone is a deep sleeper who doesn’t change position too much.

Edge Support Ability

Idle sleep edge support test

If there’s anything that we didn’t like from the Idle Sleep Hybrid, it has to be its edge support. Though it isn’t the worst, it doesn’t shine in this category.

A lot of sleepers tend to feel comfortable when they position themselves near the edge of the bed. If you are around 200 lbs+ and the type who wants to maximize the entire surface of the mattress, you might not get to enjoy it here. And this is something understandable. Though there are coils to offer some edge support, keep in mind that the majority of the layers are made of foam. You may feel as if you are about to roll off if you are sleeping too near the edge. Remember, this is only for larger-bodied people; petite and perhaps young children should have a more positive experience closer to the edge.

Available Sizes & Dimensions

Below are the available sizes, dimensions, and weight of the Idle Hybrid.

Size Dimensions (W L H) Weight Coil Count

Twin XL 38” x 80” x 14” 87 lbs. 772

Queen 60” x 80” x 14” 130 lbs. 1,130
King 76” x 80” x 14” 150 lbs. 1,414
Cali King 72” x 84” x 14” 150 lbs. 1,384

Warranty & Sleep Trial

The Idle mattress comes with an 18 month sleep trial. So, compared to other mattresses of this mid-range price category and hybrid design, it has a very lengthy trial period. Some companies offer as much as 365 nights. For example, Nectar (which is memory foam), and Spindle (which is latex) both allow for 1-years in-home trial, but not many hybrid mattresses come with 1-years, let alone an 18-month trial. The norm is around the 100-day mark.

Again, the warranty provided with the Idle Hybrid is very long. In fact, the warranty never runs out and covers against body impressions too. Most companies offer in the region of 10-20 years for a comparable mattress. However, forever warranties are becoming exceedingly popular.

The Old vs. The New

As we mentioned, this is the new and updated Idle Hybrid model for 2020. The update benefits from the following:

  • A new removable cover with a zipper and durable handles.
  • The buoyancy foam has been upgraded from a cheaper quilt foam.
  • The cover is now removable/replaceable.
  • The older version was not dual-firmness.

Who Should Buy The Idle Sleep Mattress?

Couple changing sheets on their new Idle Sleep mattress

Heavy individuals

The mattress is perfect for heavy people. In particular, the firm side of the mattress does a great job of supporting sleepers who are plus-sized. Idle Sleep claims their mattresses can withstand upwards of 800 lbs combined. So, 400 lbs on either side is a good deal of weight that not many mattresses out there will cope with.

People who sleep with bed-sharing partners

If you are sleeping with a partner, the Idle Sleep mattress can prevent you from waking up in the middle of the night because you feel your partner tossing and turning. It does an excellent job of isolating movements.

People who have pets

The same can be said about large pets. It does well keeping the movement to a minimum on the other side of the mattress. This makes it perfect for those who have large dogs.

People who need support on their back

If you have back issues or the occasional back pain when you wake up, the Hybrid Idle Sleep mattress can offer some relief. The coils and advanced foam work in tandem to support your spine, keeping it in a neutral position. Additionally, the hips and shoulders are also well supported by both sides of the mattress.

Those who prefer different firmness level

Many consumers nowadays still expect flippable 2-sided mattresses like they were in the past. This isn’t always the case from modern mattresses. However, a bonus and significant selling point of the Idle mattress is the dual firmness feature. If you want different firmness levels from your mattress, simply flip it over and get a different experience altogether.

Our Idle Mattress Ratings

The Verdict

The Idle mattress is an excellent purchase that offers a bundle of comfort and value. The dual firmness options are a big win, especially at this price. However, don’t get too overwhelmed by the price. You still have the likelihood of a discount from the company. They have been known to offer as much as $399 off on some sizes, which makes it a sweet deal considering the quality of the mattress.

It’s a great option regardless if you sleep alone or with a partner. And despite having multiple layers of foam, the mattress isn’t as hot as other hybrids of similar construction.

Also, with the lifetime warranty and 18-month trial, free returns, and delivery, the Idle Hybrid is definitely one to try out even in 2022.
