Purple Mattress Review and Ratings

Better Slumber

If having the idea of having a great sleep ever crossed your mind, it’s a must that you find the right mattress that matches your needs. From the ability to provide support on your back to being able to keep you cool in the middle of the night, these are some of the main reasons why the Purple mattress is gaining popularity among customers.

But what can you expect from the Purple mattress? Is this the right purchase for your needs? Or perhaps, it’s something that won’t fit your requirements? Here’s our comprehensive Purple mattress review of what to expect from this popular product.

Who Is This Mattress Best For?

Who Won't Love This Mattress?

The Purple Mattress

"The Purple Grid is instantly soft where you want it and firm where you need it."

Firmness and Feel

When it comes to Purple mattress firmness, it can be considered as medium-firm. However, if you weigh around 150 lbs and below, you might even think that it’s a firm mattress. In our opinion, the mattress rates around 7/10 on a comfort scale of 1 being the softest and 10 being extremely hard.

Mattress firmness scale: 7 / 10

The firmness is due to the thick transitional foam that you find in the Purple mattress. It is thicker than most transitional foams found in the various luxury mattresses in the market. Beneath everything, you get 4 inches of 2.0 PCF high-density polyfoam that can easily support heavy weighted people who are going to use the mattress.

While using the Purple, it’s common to feel as if you are having a floating sensation. Thanks to this technology, the proprietary grid on the top layer conforms to your hips and shoulders, relieving most of the pressure. However, with the layers of thick transitional and high-density foam below, you won’t feel as if you are sinking.

But even if you weigh more than 230 lbs, the mattress does a good job of relieving pressure. However, you won’t have an equally good experience in all positions. For instance, if you tend to sleep on your back or your side, the Purple bed does an excellent job supporting the shoulders and hips, even on heavy individuals. However, if you’re a stomach sleeper, you’ll notice that the mattress tends to dip a little near the hips.

Mattress Layers and Construction

hyperelastic polymer
Hyper-Elastic Polymer™ gel top layer

For starters, there are three main layers that you’ll see in the Purple mattress. Found on the topmost area is the SoftFlex cover. This is a super-soft wave knit with a breathable design that promotes airflow that can keep the user cool while asleep. It also serves to help the ability and functionality of the proprietary Purple Grid to flex.

The next layer is composed of a 2″ Hyper-Elastic Polymer Purple Grid gel foam. This is a proprietary material that helps relieve pressure points throughout the body. But unlike memory foam, this absorbs less body heat.

Next, you have the dual-layered comfort foam. It is composed of both the transitional and the support layers of foam. Combined with all the layers, the Purple mattress thickness measures around 9.25 inches.

Body Temperature Regulation

The Purple Grid is known for its open construction. It has different columns and rows of little polymer squares that are responsible for keeping the airflow in the foam and in between the different layers of the mattress. Similar to a spring mattress, it also traps a minimal amount of body heat, keeping the user comfortable. In comparison with other mattresses that use memory foam, this one is exceptionally cool and so people who get hot at night should have no issues with the Purple.

Motion Transfer Capability

The proprietary grid used on the Purple bed mattress is also why this product has done well in terms of isolating motion. The grid is designed to absorb the user’s body weight and keep the rest of the other parts of the mattress flat. Because of this, you won’t feel the other person moving around. However, this mattress is still very responsive despite having the ability to isolate motion. So, couples who toss and turn at night won’t have trouble moving around and switching positions, and, when they move, their partner will be undisturbed.

Edge Support

Edge support is something that you might not like about the Purple mattress. Users will notice that there is a little sinkage once you sit at the edge of the bed. This is specifically true for those who are heavier. If you weigh more than 230 pounds, you will notice that you might dip or roll a bit if you are sleeping at the edge. In addition to this, you can expect the mattress to get worse, especially when the top support/Hyper-Elastic polymer deteriorates.

But is this surprising? Not really. It is comparable to most all-foam mattresses when it comes to edge support. Mattresses that have innerspring and hybrid models are known to have better edge support than foam mattresses.

Preferred Bed Type

Purple mattress

Since the Purple mattress is an all-foam mattress, you can use virtually all types of beds. Even those that can be adjusted to accommodate those who prefer to sleep with their head slightly elevated (known as adjustable beds). However, keep in mind that the Purple mattress is 9.5 inches thick. It means that you shouldn’t expect a 90-degree angle on your elevation.

However, the ideal type of bed is a frame that allows the mattress to stay flat. You can choose a platform bed or stick to the slatted bed frame. If you choose the slatted frame, be sure to keep the distance of the slats to a maximum of 3 inches.

Warranty and Sleep Trial

The warranty is set at 10 years, and the sleep trial is 100 nights. For foam mattresses, both of these figures are about right. Most people change their mattresses within 10 years, and 100 nights is plenty of time to decide whether or not you’d like to keep the mattress. However, competitors are offering lifetime warranties and up 180-365-night trials. If that interests you, check our Nectar review.

Value For Money

Even before any discount, the Purple mattress offers good value for money due to the comfort, durability, warranty, and sleep trial. The Purple mattress price isn’t as expensive as it could be, considering some brands using budget materials and construction methods cost similar, if not more. You may not always find a Purple mattress coupon or promo code. However, you can still enjoy the mattress for much less than some of its rivals, as it’s a very competitive price for an all-foam mattress.

Who Should Buy The Purple Mattress?

well-rested woman

Those who sleep hot

One of the main problems that people encounter is that they wake up in the middle of the night sweating. The Purple mattress is perfect when it comes to cooling and limiting the absorption of body heat. The proprietary grid used on the foam maintains good airflow that can help give you a neutral temperature preventing you from sleeping hot in the process. You can stay in one spot and not get sweaty.

Couples

The Purple mattress is perfect for couples. If you have a partner who tends to move around in bed in the middle of the night, you won’t be bothered since the layers of foam isolate motion on the other side of the bed. The proprietary gel Grid does a great job of contouring the body and limiting the disturbance on the surface along the other side.

People who sleep with large pets

The same applies if you sleep with a large pet. You can enjoy undisturbed slumber since the mattress’s surface does a good job of contouring and keeping the movement on the other side to a minimum.

Health-conscious and eco-conscious consumers

A lot of foams in the market contain harmful chemicals that are bad for both the environment and people’s health. This isn’t the case with the Purple mattress. All the layers of foam are CertiPUR-certified, which means that it doesn’t contain any flame retardants, formaldehyde, and other harmful chemicals that can cause health and environmental issues.

Those who sleep on their back and side

The Purple mattress is perfect for those who sleep either on their back or their side. It does an excellent job of contouring the spots that are in direct contact with the mattress. The mattress’s proprietary Hyper-Elastic polymer does a good job in adjusting to the person’s overall form adapting to the groves supporting the shoulder and the hips well.

Combo sleepers

Combo sleepers are among those who move around a lot at night, switching between positions. We have already mentioned that back and stomach sleepers will prefer this mattress most. However, combo sleepers will love this mattress because the Hyper-Elastic polymer top layer is very responsive and offers some bounce. This means that people will be able to move around easily and freely, without exerting too much effort (which is sometimes the case with foam mattresses).

Users with spinal issues

If you have spinal issues, you’ll be able to sleep without worrying about experiencing back pain the next morning. Apart from the grid foam that Purple mattresses are known for, you also get to enjoy thick transitional foam and a thick 4-inch high-density base right at the bottom of the mattress for additional rigidity.

Those who need a Split King

Do you have a split adjustable bed? Rarely do you see a premier mattress that is available beyond the King and Cal King size. This isn’t the case with the Purple Mattress; you can enjoy the Split King too.

Those who are unsure about their purchase

Are you not sure about buying a Purple mattress? The good thing is that you can try it out for the first 100 nights. After this, you can decide whether you want a refund or want to keep the mattress. However, if you opt to have an exchange rather than a refund, you will no longer be eligible for a 100-day trial.

Purple Mattress Complaints

Not ideal for heavy people

If you weigh above 230 pounds, you won’t be able to enjoy this bed that much. Though it has thick layers of premium foam unlike in some other mattresses, it still doesn’t offer the same kind of experience compared to users around 150 pounds. Overweight sleepers should check our list of the top 5 best mattresses for heavy people.

Those who love to sleep at the edge of the bed

Do you usually like to sleep at the edge of your bed? If you are the type who likes to stay off-center, then you might encounter the feeling as if you are falling off when you near the edge too much. This is quite expected though if you are using an all-foam mattress.

Our Purple Mattress Ratings

The Verdict

The Purple mattress is a great choice for people who are looking for a comfortable and supportive all-foam mattress. It performs better than most memory foams for many reasons. One, it uses a unique Hyper-Elastic polymer grid system that helps keep the users stay cool. In addition to this, it has thick transitional foam and support foam that can accommodate almost every type of sleeper while providing adequate pressure relief.

However, our Purple mattress review has found that it isn’t exactly perfect. It does have some minor flaws that might be a concern for some sleepers. The good news is that you can try it out for 100 nights. You’ll be able to decide after if you like the Purple mattress or not.
