Titan Mattress Review: Is It Any Good For Heavy People?

One of the most common complaints that you get from plus-sized heavy customers is that they experience sinking too much in their mattress. And though some mattresses offer sufficient support on an average-sized person, it’s not the same for overweight people. This problem is quite common, especially if the firmness level is too soft. At times, even a firm mattress doesn’t get the job done when dealing with someone who is over 220 pounds.

The Titan is a mattress by Brooklyn Bedding, a company that has been in business since 1995. This hybrid mattress is particularly aimed at heavy weight individuals and combines both foam and spring to give consumers the best sleep experience.

In our Titan mattress review, we’ll take an in-depth look at this mid-priced product and ultimately evaluate whether or not it really is a good mattress for heavy people.

Who Is This Mattress Best For?

  • Plus size sleepers who weigh more than 250 lbs
  • Those who like hybrid mattresses (memory foam and innerspring)
  • Sleepers who would like a medium-firm mattress
  • People who get hot at night and need a cooler sleep surface

Who Won't Love This Mattress?

  • People who like a very firm mattress
  • Those who want a bouncy mattress
  • Petite bodied people (or anyone under 150 lbs)

The Titan Mattress

"Designed to bring the best comfort and support for heavier bodied people."

Titan Layers & Construction

The Titan mattress is composed of four layers. Each layer of this mattress plays a vital role in giving heavy people a superb sleeping experience. Let’s take a closer look at each of these:

  • First, you have the 1-inch quilted, gel memory foam. Gel is ideal for regulating body temperature, especially for those who suffer from night sweats.
  • Next, you have the 2-inch layer of patented TitanFlex foam, which is a polyfoam specifically made not only for contouring but to help provide relief in joints and those areas that usually have pressure.
  • The following is a thick 6-inch foundation layer containing heavy-duty steel coils. It consists of up to 961 individually encased TitanCaliber™ coils, which work independently of each other, enhancing motion isolation and contouring properties.
  • The last layer is a 2-inch high-density foam base that reinforces the coils while it gets compressed when the sleeper is on top. This acts as a secondary base and adds to the overall extra durability and resilience of the Titan mattress.

Now, similar to the very firm Plank mattress, which is also by Brooklyn Bedding, you can enjoy additional features on this mattress (which come at an additional cost). Both of these optional extras give the user a chance to further tweak their mattress depending on preference and needs.

You can buy a top panel that can be sewn into the top of the mattress. The panel will add a more cooling effect, which is perfect for hot sleepers. Or, you can opt for the Talalay latex mattress topper which makes the mattress softer, while adding durability, contouring, and comfort.

Titan Mattress Feel

Since the Titan was designed for plus size people, you’d expect the mattress to be very firm out of the factory. However, they have managed to keep it to a medium-firm, while still catering to overweight people and offering the same level of comfort and extra durability.

How Firm Is It?
Mattress firmness scale: 8 / 10

Since the Titan was designed for plus size people, you’d expect the mattress to be very firm out of the factory. However, they have managed to keep it to a medium-firm, while still catering to overweight people and offering the same level of comfort and extra durability.

From a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest, the mattress scores an 8. This means that even if you weigh somewhere around 250 pounds, you will feel that your body isn’t sinking regardless of the position that you sleep in. However, even if you are someone lighter, the mattress will be fine, especially for sleepers who prefer a firmer mattress.

It was designed mainly for sleepers who are beyond 220 pounds who typically complain about sinking in a plush mattress.

Titan & Sleeping Positions

Not all mattresses are designed for all types of sleepers. Those who sleep on their stomach typically sink and require a firmer mattress. With the Titan mattress, it is designed to withstand large individuals. It also means that regardless of your sleeping position, the mattress can provide you with the sufficient support that you need. For a stomach sleeper, you won’t feel as if you are sinking deep into the mattress surface. If you sleep on your back or side, you will have your shoulders and hips supported maintaining a neutral spine that can help alleviate back pain associated with waking up in the morning.

Addressing Back Pain Issues

If you are someone suffering from back issues, this can be a suitable mattress for you as well. Most doctors and chiropractors would typically recommend a firm or medium-firm mattress, like the Titan. Additionally, you can add the Talalay latex mattress topper to add pressure relief on your back. Latex is also perfect for contouring and provides better back support than memory foam. Latex, when combined with the independently acting coils, makes a supreme contouring team, no matter your weight.

Safety & Certifications

The Titan mattress makes use of CertiPUR-US certified foams. This means that you can expect no harmful chemicals were used in making its foam. This is an important consideration for a lot of consumers that have allergies and those who don’t want to inhale amounts of harmful chemicals in their body while they sleep.

Apart from health concerns, this is also a good option if you are concerned about the environment. It minimizes the environmental impact once the mattress finds its way in the landfills after years of usage.

Cooling Capability

titan mattress

Heavy individuals often find themselves in a predicament wherein they wake up in the middle of the night sweating. It’s common for heavy people to sleep hot. The Titan mattress is mostly composed of memory foam. Memory foam doesn’t exactly perform well in keeping the user cool. With the Titan mattress, we found it to be just right, primarily because it has additional features that can help improve user-experience when it comes to sleeping cool.

Firstly, you have the gel-infused memory foam layer, which is closest to the sleeper. The gel memory foam contributes to keeping the person’s body temperature regulated. If you still feel that this wouldn’t be enough, you can buy the additional cooling top panel as an add-on to your purchase. This will further reduce the chances of you being disturbed due to trapped heat in your foam mattress. If you get the Titan mattress without the cooling panel and find that your mattress is still too hot, you can always return the product, or perhaps look at some alternative mattress toppers.

Motion Transfer & Isolation

Movement involving large amounts of weight can cause significant motion transfer across the surface of a bed. Therefore, it’s important to consider a good motion isolation mattress when it comes to couples sharing the bed, and especially when catering for overweight people.

Again, the Titan mattress is mainly composed of multiple layers of memory foam. Memory foam is known for its excellent ability to isolate motion. Next, you also have the circa 961 individually encased coils that help isolate the user’s movement in different parts of the mattress to one area.

If you are worried about getting disturbed on your side of the bed when someone is tossing and turning trying to sleep, this shouldn’t be the case with the Titan mattress, as it does an above-average job at keeping your movement isolated.

Is It Good For Sex?

As we mentioned already, the Titan mattress is excellent at isolating movement and keeping your bed partner from being disturbed. But what is it like for sex?

Considering there is a 6-inch base made of coils, there isn’t much bounce in this mattress. Much of the foam composition overwhelms the bouncy coils, meaning the foam limits the bounce somewhat, but not all. So, if you want a very bouncy mattress that will simulate the olden days of bouncy activity, this isn’t for you. However, it isn’t as stiff as all-foam mattresses, but somewhere in between. Being a mixture of spring and foam, we’d say it’s still a perfect choice for couples who enjoy sex.

Edge Support Issues

It’s a common complaint among memory foam mattresses that the sleeper feels as if they are falling out of bed when they come too near the perimeter. This is even more an issue for heavier plus-size people. However, things seem much better here, possibly thanks to the different Titan solutions that have been put in place.

With a firmness level that falls somewhere around 8 out of 10, this means you don’t experience much sink even if you are large-bodied. Next, you also have 900+ heavy duty coils that reinforce the foam quite well, which creates an overall positive edge support experience, whether sitting near the edge or sleeping.

Shipping

The company offers to ship to both the US and Canada. However, you can only get free shipping if you are located within the continental US. For Canada and Alaska, an additional fee is required. The mattress is delivered in a box for easy transportation and setup. Currently, there is no option for international shipping for any of the Brooklyn Bedding mattresses.

Sleep Trial

The Titan Hybrid has a 120-night trial period. This way, you can evaluate whether or not it meets your expectations. However, you will be required to keep the mattress for at least 30 days before you can decide whether to have it returned or keep the mattress.

120-nights, in our opinion, is perfect for this type of mattress and compares to the Saatva (a hybrid spring over spring construction), which also offers 120-nights. Most hybrid mattresses we review float around the 100-night period.

Warranty & Returns

Brooklyn Bedding provides a 10-year warranty with the Titan mattress to cover you from defects and body impressions deeper than 1-inch. The length of trial as around the average expected for this type of mattress, although, in our opinion, it could’ve been stretched to 15-years.

The 1″ body impression is a good level of cover too, as some mattress warranties will only cover 2-inches and deeper.

Returns are free and fully refundable (excluding any shipping fees paid). If you’re not happy with the mattress after 30 days of usage (and within 120-nights), contact the support team, and they’ll ask you to arrange a donation of the mattress to a local charity. Once the charity collects the mattress (at no cost to you), contact Brooklyn Bedding to expedite your refund. Depending on your payment method, you should receive returned funds within four business days.

Who Should Buy The Titan Hybrid Mattress?

Heavy and plus sized people

The Titan mattress is designed with substantial support for heavier sleepers. So, if you weigh around 250 pounds and more, then this might be the right mattress for you.

Those who have back pain issues

Back problems are common among sleepers of all ages. If you feel that you don’t have enough support on your back, hips, or shoulders when sleeping, the Titan mattress has a quality proprietary material known as TitanFlex that follows the contours of your body. In addition to this, you have the coils that support the person’s weight and adjust the spine alignment accordingly.

Those who are unsure about their choice

Are you still not sure about your choice? Perhaps, you are worried that this mattress doesn’t fit your needs? Make use of the 120-night sleep trial to help decide in the comfort of your own home.

People who like memory foam but want to stay as cool as possible

Memory foam has a bad reputation when it comes to keeping the person cool while asleep. For this reason, Brooklyn Bedding included a 1-inch cooling gel layer on top. This can help lessen the absorption of body heat at night. In addition to this, you also get the option to purchase the cooling top panel that helps cool body temperature even more.

Those who sleep with a pet or a partner

The 961 individually encased TitanCaliber coils are known to help isolate motion. It means that in every zone in the mattress, there are specific coils at work that provide support on your weight. In doing so, the other side is also undisturbed. Apart from the coils, you also have the memory foam that contours depending on the person’s sleeping position.

Health and environment-conscious individuals

Are you someone who tends to make conscious buying decisions based on your health and the environment? The Titan hybrid mattress foams are CertiPUR-US certified. It means that you don’t have to worry about the possibility of getting an allergic reaction or inhaling chemicals that can harm your body.

Issues With The Titan Hybrid Mattress

Expensive extras

The Titan mattress price is okay, in our opinion. However, the optional cooling top panel could have been slightly cheaper. You will have to pay an additional $200 to $240 for the panel (if required), which is relatively steep in our opinion.

You might experience feeling hot when sleeping

Because it is made mostly of memory foam, regardless of the integrated gel-infused memory foam top layer, it can be a little hot, especially for people in warm climates and for those who suffer from night sweats. Adding the cooling top panel makes a huge difference and controls the temperature bringing trapped heat to a minimal.

Not great for petite and average-sized individuals

The Titan mattress is designed for plus size and heavy people. It merely is overkill for those who are petite or 150 lbs and less. If you fit into this category, you might find the mattress a bit too hard.

Our Titan Mattress Ratings

The Verdict

Heavy individuals typically have a problem when it comes to finding a high-quality mattress simply because there are not a lot of mattresses that can properly support someone’s weight concentrated in a small area of the mattress. But, with the Titan mattress, you get multiple layers of thick memory foam and durable, heavy-duty coils. These combined can effectively carry vast amounts of weight while still maintaining comfort for heavier bodied sleepers using their patented technologies.

This mattress is not for everyone, though. If you are lightweight, you might find it too hard. However, if you tend to sleep on your stomach or someone who struggles with obesity, then this is a mattress that can give you a good night’s sleep.

Overall, it’s a solidly built and affordable solution offered by one of the more established brands in the industry. What’s also great is the lengthy trial so that you can try the mattress, and if it’s not right, simply send it back.
