Rundown Of The Molecule Mattress: 2022 Edition

Better Slumber

Molecule Sleep is quickly gaining attention in the mattress industry for its new technologies that promote quicker recovery and a restful night. Who wouldn’t want comfort, a cool sleep, and faster tissue recovery?

Athletes and doctors put their minds together and designed the Molecule mattress. All the materials and the arrangement of layers are composed to ensure that people rest longer in the deepest sleep stage. At this stage (aka slow-wave sleep), the body undergoes most recovery and restoration.

The Molecule product line has two mattresses, i.e., Molecule 1 and Molecule 2. However, the company also designs mattress toppers, sheets, a bed frame, and bedding.

In this Molecule mattress review, we look at Molecule 1 – the flagship model. Keep in mind both mattresses feature proprietary foam layers. However, Molecule 1 is a more affordable option appealing to the wider market. Additionally, its memory foam has an open-cell structure and is gel-infused. Let’s take a closer look at what this mattress has to offer.

Molecule Mattress Performance

Firmness – Feel and Support

While firmness is a crucial part of any consumer buying a mattress, the overall mattress feel is highly subjective. Essentially, this means different sleepers can find the same bed to have a different feel and firmness. Factors like body shape, sizes, and types play a critical role in determining a mattress’s feel.

On a firmness scale, usually, 1 to 10 – with 1 indicated soft and 10 showing firmest, the Molecule mattress weighs in at 6. That suggests it’s a standard medium-firm mattress, a firmness that fits the sleeping needs of an extensive range of body shapes.

Mattress firmness scale: 6 / 10

The uppermost foam layer responds slowly, which leaves you with a feeling of lying in a gentle cradle. However, this might slightly differ with weight and body shape. Yet, it has a soft consistency, just like traditional memory foam mattresses.

Let’s look at how different sleepers perform:

Back sleeper

As you sleep your back, there is an initial gentle sink into the comfort layer, which is quickly followed by decent support from the base. Ideally, the mattress will conform to the shoulders and the lumbar area while the base offers support. So, these kinds of sleepers get enough support throughout the night – especially for the hip and with good spinal alignment.

Side sleepers

Side sleepers always look for pressure relief considering the increased pressure due to the small surface in contact with the mattress. Being a conforming and zoned mattress, the Molecule 1 offers exceptional pressure-point relief to side sleepers.

Stomach sleepers

The Molecule mattress isn’t a great option if you sleep on your stomach. Stomach sleepers ideally need something firmer since their hips naturally sink too deep into a soft mattress. But then again, that depends on your weight; an average stomach sleeper should find good support and alignment. However, heavier sleepers won’t be comfortable.

Combo sleepers

Combination sleepers love to use Molecule 1 because of the firm base and center, which provide a mid-level bounce. So switching positions can be a little easier. But then again, that depends on weight. Remember, there is an initial sink, which feels very comfortable.

Note: heavier sleepers often prefer a firmer mattress, regardless of the sleeping position. Such a mattress offers them the needed level of support.

Pressure Relief

Molecule 1 performs exemplarily when it comes to pressure and pain relief.

  • Back sleepers – Its medium firmness keep the back in proper alignment and provide enough support.
  • Side sleepers – The comfort layer conforms to the body; side sleepers get a decent amount of pressure relief at the hips and the shoulder.
  • Stomach sleepers – Lightweight stomach sleepers will get excellent pressure relief. However, their heavier counterparts tend to sink more, which takes the spine out of alignment.

Mattress Bounce

The bounce of a mattress indicates the level of mobility you can get. Remember, the Molecule One has a slower response to pressure since it is an all-foam bed. That means little bounce but doesn’t necessarily mean difficulty moving around. So, if you are looking for a mattress to give you a bouncy feel, all-foam mattresses aren’t ideal options. Instead, it would be best if you considered getting an innerspring or latex mattress.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is an important aspect to consider if you have a sleeping partner. Usually, your partner’s movements can disrupt sleep – mainly when they switch position or get off or on the bed.

A foam mattress can dampen all movements, and in this test, the Molecule mattress performs exceptionally well. A bed with little to no bounce means it can isolate motion well. So using this mattress, it’s almost sure that your partner’s movements will go unnoticed.

Edge Support

Superior edge support maximizes the sleeping surface of a mattress typically. Besides, they offer a great place to site in case you want to sit on the bed edge for some reason, like tieing shoelaces.

The problem is most foam mattresses struggle in this aspect. This also applies to most bed-in-a-box brands since they compress the mattresses to fit a box for easier shipping.

However, surprisingly the Molecule 1 performs reasonably well. When you sleep on the edge, you’ll feel somewhat secure as there isn’t an overwhelming feeling of falling off the bed. However, when you sit on the edge of this mattress, it compresses noticeably, especially on the top layer. But that isn’t a deal-breaker as it performs to the industry standard.

Temperature Regulation

It’s true; memory foam sleeps hot, but Molecule 1 skews towards sleeping cool. The mattress features an open cell structure to allow free airflow within the mattress. This ensures no stagnation of hot air. Besides, the gel beads help to draw out heat and dissipate it to the environment. Again, this contributes to a cool bed. Nevertheless, the mattress dips a little, which may cause a small amount of heat build-up.
